My cousin has been going through it lately. He has been dealing with some serious health issues and working hard on his recovery. He told me recently that he has been really leaning in to Psalm 23. If you know the psalm you know why. It is the one that starts with a shepherd leading his sheep to green pasture and ends with goodness and mercy following you all the days of your life. It is the psalm people reach for when the valley gets dark.
I reminded my cousin that the Good Shepherd is also the Great Physician. That one sentence sent me down a long rabbit trail, but I learned in seminary that it’s OK to chase a rabbit as long as the rabbit has meat on it!
The Rabbit Trail
I started thinking about how many titles and names we actually have for Jesus. The Good Shepherd. The Great Physician. The Lamb of God. The Prince of Peace. I started writing them down. Every title opened a door to another passage, another image, another facet of who he actually is.
When I reached thirty of them, I realized there was one for each day in June. I thought, “What if every day in June someone could spend a few minutes learning more about Jesus and getting closer to Him by thinking about one of His titles.” That is how Jesus in June was born. It came out of a conversation with my cousin, a psalm about a shepherd, and a rabbit trail I am very glad I chased.
What You Will Receive
Starting June 1, if you sign up, an email will arrive in your inbox every morning for thirty days. Each one is built around a title of Jesus — who gave us that title, what it meant to the people who first heard it, and what it means for you today.
The titles run from the familiar to the surprising. You will spend a morning with The Good Shepherd and another with The Lamb of God, but you will also spend time with The Last Adam, The Root of David, The Firstborn from the Dead, and The Atoning Sacrifice — titles that are just as rich and just as personal, even if they are not as well known.
Each entry includes three things: a reflection that unpacks the title in its biblical context, a Dig Deeper cross-reference pointing you to a related passage worth exploring, and a prayer prompt to move the truth from your head into your heart.
How to Sign Up
Signing up is completely free. Go to viewfromvine.com/jesus-in-june, enter your email address, and your first devotional will arrive on June 1.
This is not just an FBC West thing or a Baptist thing. I put this together for anyone who wants to spend a month getting to know Jesus more deeply. If you have a friend, a family member, a coworker, or a neighbor who loves Jesus (regardless of what church they attend) send them the link. The Good Shepherd cares for all his sheep, not just the ones in my particular pasture.
If someone like my cousin comes to mind as you read this, someone going through a hard season and leaning on the names of Jesus to get through it, send them the link today because it is not too late to sign up.
I will see you on June 1,
John
